| Marquette University PT students initiated The Marquette Challenge in 1989 as a fundraising effort to support physical therapy research through the American Physical Therapy Association's Foundation for Physical Therapy.
Each year, PT students at Marquette University challenge others at PT and PTA programs across America to raise money for physical therapy research. The student organization that raises the greatest amount of funds is declared the Challenge winner and honored with co-hosting the following year with Marquette University. Prizes are awarded to the top three schools and to schools in the honorable mention category. All participating schools are recognized in the media and at the Foundation dinner at the APTA Annual Conference.
The University of Miami, who raised $17,643, won 1st Place for the 5th time in Challenge history and will co-host the Challenge this year. Miami faced tough competition from the University of Colorado Denver, who raised $14,450, and last year’s co-host Georgia State University, who raised $11,310. In total, the 2009 Georgia State-Marquette Challenge raised $200,137 by 64 participating schools. Since the inception of the Challenge, students have raised over $1.55 million dollars for the Foundation for Physical Therapy.
The 2010 Miami – Marquette Challenge represents newfound competition. The University of Miami is looking to continue its strong fundraising efforts this year and win for the 6th time in Challenge history. Everyone in the profession looks forward to see who will win the next Challenge. Perhaps a new winner will emerge, or maybe the University of Miami will successfully defend its title.

All money raised by the Challenge is donated to the Foundation for Physical Therapy.
The organization funds research grants supporting studies designed to evaluate the “effectiveness of physical therapist interventions.” Each year, the money is awarded as a one-year research grant.
