A benefit for the Physical Therapy Faculty Student Scholarship fund to assist 5th and 6th year graduate students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Marquette University.
Limited to Physical Therapists. Licensure verification required. Limit of 30 participants.
This course will include description of the kinematics and functional anatomy of the cervical and thoracic spine, and the physical therapy examination, classification, and treatment of cervical and thoracic spine disorders with integration of an evidence-based manual physical therapy approach to address select cervical and thoracic spine disorders.
Program is submitted for CEU approval through the WPTA. Course #.
The lab manual for this course is Manual Physical Therapy of the Spine (K. Olson, 2009) and is available for purchase by checking the box marked “Textbook” on the registration form and enclosing the additional cost of the book. If participants choose not to purchase the book, they will receive an outline of lab material. All participants will receive copies of the presentation slides. The textbook is highly recommended.
- Describe the functional anatomy and kinematics of the cervical and thoracic spine
- Identify the classification of cervical and thoracic spine disorders and describe the components of each disorder
- Perform a comprehensive examination of the cervical and thoracic spine
- Perform treatment procedures for the cervical and thoracic spine including soft tissue mobilization, joint mobilization/manipulation, and exercise instruction
- Describe the evidence to support a manual physical therapy approach for treatment of cervical and thoracic spine disorders.

is the president and managing partner of the physical therapy private practice Northern Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Associates in DeKalb, Illinois. Ken is the past president of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and currently serves on the AAOMPT practice committee chair, the APTA manipulation task force chair, the orthopaedic section practice committee and the IPTA legislative committee. He also serves on the executive committee of the International Federation of Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapists. Additionally, he is currently an adjunct assistant professor for Marquette University. He is author of the textbook titled: Manual Physical Therapy of the Spine published by Saunders, Elsevier in 2009.
