Teach In

JUSTICE

The Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice is an annual gathering of students from Jesuit institutions from all across the country. Each year Ignatian family gathers to respond to the justice issues of our day and honor the lives of the Salvadoran martyrs. The event, which is in its 12th year, serves to educate and provide the opportunity for advocacy and action. This year we will meet in Washington, D.C. so that we can meet with our governmental representatives to discuss the School of the Americas, immigration, and other important social justice concerns.

The Teach-In takes place in November to commemorate the 6 Jesuit priests and 2 lay women at the University of Central America who were murdered on November 16th 1989 by U.S.-trained Salvadoran troops.

The Ignatian Family Teach-In is a powerful experience, especially for students, who connect with their faith through education, liturgy, and nonviolent action. The Ignatian Family Teach-In began in 1998 under the guidance of Bob Holstein and the Jesuit Companions. Under the direction of the Ignatian Solidarity Network, the teach-in has grown in each year since its inception, attracting over 1,500 people from nearly all 28 Jesuit Colleges and Universities and many Jesuit High Schools. The Teach-In now also includes an Advocacy Day when students are encouraged to lobby their representatives on legislation that impacts social justice issues of our day.

This year's Ignatian Family Teach-In For Justice will be held November 12-14. 2011. We will meet at Mitchell International Airport in the morning of November 12 and return in the evening of November 14th. Since we will not be back for classes on Monday, participants should inform their professors about missing any scheduled Monday classes.

This event is co-sponsored by J.U.S.T.I.C.E..
