Day of Silence - April 20, 2012

Marquette University will observe a Day of Silence campuswide on April 20, 2012. The Day of Silence is a day where concerned individuals take some form of a vow of silence to bring attention to the name-calling, bullying and harassment – the silencing – experienced by Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered, or Questioning (LGBTQ) persons.

The Day of Silence is an especially important observance at Marquette because we are committed to building a campus environment and university community that cherishes the human dignity of each person. By observing the Day of Silence, we take an active role in reshaping ourselves and our campus to better reflect our stated values.

There are a number of ways you can participate in the Day of Silence:

  1. Vow to be silent, for even part of the day, and wear a sticker that explains your silence to others. Stickers will be made available in the AMU on the 2nd floor on Friday, April 20th.
  2. Sign the Day of Silence Sign on the 2nd floor of the AMU on Friday April 15.
  3. Meet outside the St. Joan of Arc Chapel at 4 pm and join a silent procession to the Brew Bayou for an open mic and spoken word program to “Break the Silence.”
  4. Get the word out: share information about the Day of Silence with friends, student groups, professors, administrators, and other members of the Marquette community.
  5. Participate in programs leading up to the Day of Silence, which are part of LGBTQ Solidarity Week. For more information, click here.
Sponsored by Campus Ministry, Counseling Center, Division of Student Affairs, Gender Sexuality Alliance, and Multicultural Affairs in the Office of Student Development.
