January 2005, first day of the semester. The hum of computers is broken by the clack of chalk as I write out the course number and my name. Students shuffle in, freshmen mostly, a hint of uncertainty in their eyes. I check the clock, then my watch. So much to cover: Leads, nut graphs, sourcing; clarity, context, accuracy. But also this, especially this: It is not enough to write well. You must have something to write about. You must have passion, empathy, discipline, purpose. I learned that here, starting in this very room. Now it’s my turn. “Good morning,” I say. “I used to be you.”
