Novelist and Non-Fiction Writer (Boulder, CO)
How can Marquette educate journalists to step into a media world that seems to change overnight? The answer hit me on a recent visit – Marquette has always prepared students for an unknowable future. Who could have anticipated that my typewriter-linotype generation would have to adapt to computers, digitization and the Internet? And yet Marquette gave us the skills to do so. We learned to think, research, analyze, organize information and write clear, concise sentences. We learned to care about getting it right. Those skills are timeless. So, to the fortunate students at Marquette today, I say: Bring on the future.
