I vividly remember covering Mother Teresa’s acceptance of the Pere Marquette Award for the Tribune. I was shocked at how quiet the packed MECCA was as Mother Teresa, a tiny woman with such strength in character, walked in. I felt humbled to cover the event and attend the press conference. I raised my hand, becoming quite nervous to be speaking with a living saint. I asked her something along the lines of how she coped in getting up daily to care for the poor. I listened, momentarily forgetting to write the response. A second or two into her reply – she addressed the value of prayer – I diligently wrote her response. I think I still have that notebook.
