Herbert Lowe

Professional in Residence, Journalism Department, Diederich College of Communication, Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI)

The College of Journalismís entire freshmen class was sitting for orientation in Marquette Hall in August 1980. The dean, Dr. James Scotton, told us something then that has stuck with me ever since: Journalists are the only people who can consistently write three sentences in a row that are grammatically correct. After working as a reporter at seven newspapers and later as a nonprofit communications director, I have found his assertion to be so true. Thirty years later, part of my mission as a faculty member here is to ensure our journalism students can write three consecutive sentences correctly.
