I had Patrick Horan for first semester English. On my first three themes, he gave me an F. I had been a high school honor student, so these three F’s didn’t sit well with me. ‘Forget what you've learned in high school about writing,’ he told me. ‘Write like you talk and think. If you want to write a one-word sentence, do it. If you want to begin a sentence with a conjunction, do it. End a sentence with a preposition – do it. Just write the way you feel and talk. You’ll be all right.’ I got a C for a final grade in that course. I was all right. Then. And today!
