I hadn’t noticed the Trib photographer. It was the eve of Election Day 2004, and both presidential candidates were in Milwaukee. I was covering the rally for John Kerry, while George W. Bush was a few blocks away. I’d gone through security, fought through the crowd to the press area. It was rainy. I brushed water off a folding chair and set it up under the truck bed for the cameras. I was taking notes, sitting under the truck when the photographer snapped my picture. She showed it to me later. ‘This,’ I thought with pride, ‘looks like a journalist.’
