Background, studies and interests?
I grew up in the small Chicago suburb of Woodridge, IL with my parents Robert and Diane Valentine and my younger brother Terrence. I attended Downers Grove North High School where I was active in sports and extra curricular activities. As a three-sport athlete, I played volleyball, basketball, and softball my first two years of high school and continued with softball for a third year. I also began my involvement in Direct Action Club (a community service organization), Government Club, Snowball (a drug and alcohol prevention program) and National Honor Society—taking on various leadership roles in each. In my community, I tutor grade school children in the summer and volunteer through the resource center. My interest in the social sciences granted me the social studies department award at the close of my high school career. I was also accepted into the all-academic team for my graduating class.
Why Marquette?
My first visit to Marquette was in the spring of my junior year. Right away, I felt a positive welcoming attitude radiate from everyone I met, and I knew that type of atmosphere was right for me. I also liked the fact that Marquette was immersed in an urban neighborhood, which I knew would allow me a range of opportunities. The size of the student body and the campus was perfect for me.
Now that you’re here?
Currently, I am undecided in the Diederich College of Communication but hope to integrate journalism, communication studies, and a social science. I am exploring the fields of political science, philosophy, and history. As a participant in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program at Marquette, I travel to a nearby school every week to mentor a second grader. Living in a city definitely has its perks. There is always something to do—whether it’s a trip to one of the museums, walk to the lake, going out to eat, or to a Brewers game. I am having an awesome time on campus so far and I look forward to discovering more of what Marquette has to offer in the years to come!
