Master of Arts Degree in Communication

Tailored to your interests, goals and background

Maybe you've just earned your undergraduate degree, or you're already working full time. You may already be in your chosen field but want the added depth of knowledge to advance in your career. Maybe you envision a career in teaching and plan to pursue a Ph.D. in the future, or maybe you simply want the intellectual enrichment that a master's degree offers.

Our master of arts program is designed to fit your needs and your dreams. Your graduate adviser helps you complement the Common Core with electives and courses in your specialization to create a program of study that prepares you for the next phase of your life.

Some of our students attend Marquette full-time; others combine their studies with outside employment. All become part of a community dedicated to intellectual challenge, academic excellence and personal growth.

The Common Core. All graduate students in communication take the following core courses, 15 credits total, in addition to those required for their area of specialization. The core serves as a solid foundation.

  • COMM 6000 Theories of Communication
  • COMM 6050 Research Methods in Communication
  • COMM 6100 Qualitative Research Methods or COMM 6150 Quantitative Research Methods
  • COMM 6250 Professional and Research Ethics in Communication
  • At least one more COMM course at the 6000 level
Specializations: All graduate students in communication choose a specialization from the areas below and take nine credit hours of coursework. See the full description of specializations and course requirements.
  • Advertising and Public Relations
  • Communication Studies
  • Journalism
  • Mass Communication
  • Science, Health and Environmental Communication

Thesis and Professional Tracks. Thesis-track students complete six credits of COMM 6999, Master's Thesis, in addition to the 24 credits of required course work from the Common Core and specialization courses, for 30 credits total.

Professional-track students can complete a professional project or pursue an all-course option, for 36 credits total.

Students who choose to complete a project, need nine elective course credits and three credits of COMM  6998, Professional Project, in addition to the 24 credits of required course work from the Common Core and specialization courses.

Students who pursue the course option need 12 elective course credits in addition to the 24 credits of required course work from the Common Core and specialization courses.
