Concerns about alcohol and other drugs bring students to the Counseling Center for three main reasons.  Some students of Marquette University come from a family where alcohol or other drug use is a problem.  These students sometimes feel different when they are around students who are drinking and may not feel like having fun.  They sometimes wonder if they’ll fit in or they are reminded of a host of feelings associated with the discomfort, embarrassment or disappointment caused by a problem drinker in their family.  These students are often encouraged to attend the Al-Anon meeting held on campus and some also attend counseling.

Other students make appointments at the Counseling Center because they are worried about the alcohol/other drug use of a roommate or friend of theirs.  The friend may be struggling with school, having problems with relationships or engaging in risky behaviors while drinking.  They also are worried about how their friend’s use is beginning to impact them.

The third group of students who seek services from the Counseling Center have some concern about their own use of alcohol/other drugs.  They may already have had trouble related to drinking/using drugs or are fearful that they might be heading in that direction. 

The Counseling Center provides a range of services in the area of alcohol/other substances screening, assessment, early intervention and treatment.  Students can meet with a professional for an individual interview and together evaluate the role alcohol/other drugs play in the student’s life.  Afterward, the counselor will discuss options the student may wish to pursue.  The options may include, but are not limited to participation in a group or short term outpatient treatment. Students requiring assistance beyond the scope of our alcohol/other drug services at the MU Counseling Center may be referred to other University or community agencies.
