Chemical Proteomics is the use of chemical probes to study protein function and mechanism in a systems-based manner.
Tools:
- Synthetic organic chemistry
- Cell biology
- Protein biochemistry
- Chemoinformatics
- Spectroscopy
Studies can be done:
- in vitro: parallel studies of related proteins
- in tissue extracts (2D gels)
- in whole organisms (imaging)
"Chemical Biology" uses probes to address biological questions in vivo.
