MASTERING COMMUNICATIONS

Presenter:  Ms. Laura V. Page

Fee:  $595

CEUs:  1.5

Interpersonal communication skills are needed for so many aspects of organizational excellence - team building, customer service, coaching, interviewing, conflict resolution, selling, strategic planning - the list is long and important. However, interpersonal communication skills that seem simple and natural become critical and more complex when the going gets tough - to listen when you don't agree with the other person, to assert yourself when you are afraid, to search for new ideas when a discussion is at loggerheads, to speak confidently when you are nervous.

Situations like these require masterful communication skills and a commitment to effectiveness goals. This class will support the development of both by deepening your understanding of the fundamental nature of human communication and by encouraging practice of some of the more difficult skills. Both video and in-class examples of interpersonal skills will be analyzed and discussed in detail. Major focus will be on listening skills, conflict resolution, presentations, giving performance feedback, handling defensiveness, nonverbal communication, and creating shared meaning.

SIX THINKING HATS

Presenter:  Dr. James Schreier

Fee:  $595

CEUs:  1.5

Much of our thinking is done in a confused way. We often try to do too much at once. Emotions, information, logic, hope and creativity are all mixed in. It’s like juggling too many balls. As a result, we begin to limit our thinking. We start to use only one type of thinking for every situation; usually critical or negative thinking. That’s like a golfer using only one club; a driver may be perfect for teeing off, but it is clumsy on the putting green!

Six Thinking Hats is a simple and powerful tool that will change the way people think. It promotes the kind of innovative thinking and creative problem-solving that is vital to success.  With a simple tip of a hat, people will step outside the confines of narrow-mindedness and one-way thinking. You will have the ability to look at things in a new way and see new opportunities. Six Thinking Hats will give you the know-how to conduct your thinking as a conductor might lead an orchestra. You’ll learn how to move your thinking from the negative to the positive, from emotional reactions to “just the facts”. You’ll replace one-dimensional thinking with six dimensional thinking!

Date:  April 17 & 18, 2008

Time:  8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
