Since your graduation from MU, what has been your career path?
After graduation I moved to Detroit and worked as an Americorp volunteer for a year. After that I worked unhappily in a bank for a few years until I decided I wanted to be a librarian. I went back to get my masters degree and a few months later I started working in a public library.
Describe your typical workday.
I have no typical workday, which is great! I plan and host library programs, answer all sort of questions and work to promote the library in the community.
What is the best or most exciting part of your profession?
Every day is different and every interaction with the public is different.
What advice would you provide for a job seeker in your field?
Look in traditional libraries and in the places that can use information specialists.
What are essential skills one must possess for success in your field?
You have to like working with people and always be curious. Good computer skills are also good to have.
What can a current Marquette student do to effectively prepare for a career in your field?
Any undergraduate degree can be useful as a librarian and a good liberal arts basis also helps.
How does one find a summer job or internship in your field, and are there any other opportunities to gain experience before graduation?
Volunteer in a library or get a job as an intern or aide in your local library.
