Career Fair!

WorkForce 2007 is only two weeks away!

Attending career fairs is a great way to meet employers and to learn about job and internship opportunities.  Here are a few steps that you can use to prepare and make the most of WorkForce 2007.

Before the Career Fair

  • Write a resume highlighting skills and experiences related to your goal.  Visit www.marquette.edu/csc/students/resume to check out the Career Services Center resources for resume writing.  You can also ask questions at our walk in hours: Monday – Friday from 1pm – 3pm.
  • Identify employers of interest.  A list of the employers that will be at WorkForce is available at www.marquette.edu/csc.  You can click on the employer name to see the types of positions they are recruiting for.  Try to keep an open mind, hospitals need accountants and accounting firms need PR staff…  Research the companies and organizations you are interested in so you can ask meaningful questions.
  • Develop your Professional Image.  Pull together a professional outfit.  Suits are appropriate, but if you don’t have a suit, you can borrow one from a friend.  Dress pants and a sweater can also look professional.  For tips, check out the Dress for Success handout at www.marquette.edu/csc/students/documents/DressforSuccess_UP96.pdf
  • Prepare Your 60 Second Commercial.  This is a professional way to begin an intelligent and effective conversation with employers.  Be sure to address:
    • Where you are now (degree, program, year in college)
    • Where you have been (career-related experience)
    • Where you are going (future goals)

    For example:

“Hello.  I’m Dot and I will graduate in 2008 with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication.  As a student here at Marquette, I have had the chance to gain leadership and organizational skills through my involvement with the ABC Club.  In addition, I have worked for two years as a server at the Annex allowing me to gain valuable customer service experience.  I am seeking an internship in the field of public relations for the coming summer.  Can you share with me any opportunities within your organization that might fit with my skills and experience?”

What to Bring:

  • Copies of your resume on quality resume paper (Bring more than you think you will need: you don’t want to find a great employer and have run out of resumes!)
  • A portfolio or folder for your resumes and materials from employers.
  • Your SMILE!  A friendly attitude is part of a positive professional image.

At the Career Fair

  • Turn off your cell phone!
  • Locate your chosen employers on the map
  • Offer you hand for a professional handshake (one shake)
  • Begin the conversation with your commercial
  • Ask the employer a question relating to your career goal
  • Ask the employer for next steps and get the employer’s business card

After the Fair

Employers attend Career Fairs to meet students, not to make offers.  The offers come through a continued conversation with the employer through follow up.  Aside from attending the fair, follow up is the most important part!

  • Send a thank you email or letter to the employer after the fair.  Be sure to include a copy of your resume.
  • Act on the steps the employer gave you at the fair: apply online, sign up for a campus interview, etc.

Good Luck at WorkForce 2007!

internships

No college student should be graduating without career-related experience.  Be sure to gain skills through internships and co-ops related to your career goal or major.  View internships posted recently for Marquette University students. To see even more internships plus full-time jobs, register with MU CareerTRAK.

Don't miss these great SUMMER INTERNSHIP opportunities!

ask dot

Dear Dot,

I have read all of the information that the Career Services Center has about career fairs, but I still feel really awkward about just walking up to employers and talking to them.  What can I do to not feel this way?
