Considering a summer internship? Start your search now!
Thinking about getting an internship this summer? Great idea! Summer Internships are an excellent way to gain career-related experience. Internships provide an opportunity to learn about career fields, develop skills and gain experiences that will help prepare you for your goals after graduation. Plus, employers are always telling CSC staff that they like to see job applicants with internship experience.
So, you know you want to work as an intern this summer – what next? Start Now!
- First, define what type of internship you are seeking. Do you want to learn more about a specific career field (advertising, non-profit organizations, etc)? Do you want to gain experiences with a specific skill (research, event planning, or writing)? Identifying your goals for your internship will help make your search easier and more focused. If you are struggling with this decision, please consider making an appointment to talk with a career counselor.
- Determine where you are willing to go. Are you looking in the Milwaukee area, your home town, or nationwide?
- Put together a resume and cover letter. Check out the Career Services Center’s online resources for these topics available at www.marquette.edu/csc/students/resume.shtml. You always want to send cover letters, even if the job posting only asks for a resume!
- Get your resume and cover letter critiqued. You can come to the CSC walk in hours (Monday – Friday from 1pm – 3pm) or email your resume to career.services@mu.edu.
- START LOOKING. The three best ways to find internships are:
- Review Online Postings: check out MUCareerTRAK and Golden Eagle Search in the Career Gateway on the CSC homepage. Check out the CSC internship pages at: www.marquette.edu/csc/students/findaninternship.shtml
- Develop a list of Target Employers: Where do you want to work? The CSC career library, Reference USA (through the Career Gateway) and professional associations are great ways to get list of employers or organizations.
- Talk with People (Networking): Once you know what you are looking for, ask your professors, friends, neighbors, classmates and family who they may know or be able to refer you to in your field of interest. Also check out MUConnect (Career Gateway) to contact Marquette Alumni who work in the field.
- APPLY: The only way to get an internship is to get out there and apply. Respond to postings, contact employers on your target list and follow up on networking contacts. Looking for an internship is an assertive process. You are not bothering anyone when you call to ask about opportunities. The employers probably made similar calls when they were students looking for internships!
- Consider making an appointment with one of our career counselors by calling our office at 288-7423, or by stopping by. Our counselors can help you focus your internship search, help with cover letters and resumes, give you networking tips, etc.
Summer will be here before we know it, don’t delay your internship search.
Taking these steps now to find an internship will help get you ready for a summer of excellent career-related experiences!

Dear Dot,
I have been looking for summer internships and many of the positions I learn about are unpaid. I can’t afford to work this summer without getting paid. What should I do?
