Networking

Did you know that 75% of jobs are made available
through the informal job market?

The informal job market consists of jobs that cannot be seen, are not advertised, and are not made known to the public in a formal way. As many as 75% of jobs are not available through any publicly available process. In fact, most employers prefer referrals from employees or others since they know these are more reliable and less trouble. These positions are found through:

  • personal contacts
  • friends
  • relatives
  • direct contact with employers
  • networking

Networking is a necessary tool to access this informal job market.

There are two avenues to pursue to begin networking: warm and cold contacts. Warm contacts are people you know. Examples of warm contacts include parents, relatives, friends, neighbors, alumni, present and former co-workers, teachers, members of professional organizations, service clubs, social groups, members of labor unions, religious institutions, friends’ parents, etc.

Questions to ask these contacts include:

1. Do you know of any openings for a person with my skills?
2. Do you know of anyone else who might know of an opening?
3. Do you know someone who has a good network of professional contacts?

It is important to follow up on this information because it can lead to several other contacts.

Cold Contacts are people you do not know. Good resources for cold contacts are the yellow pages and other directories. It is also helpful to keep a record of all contacts and potential contacts. Information you will want to record is the organization, contact person, phone number, source of the lead, and notes such as dates you contacted the person and what your conversation was about.

ask dot

Dear Dot,

I am interested in making some professional contacts in the field I intend to pursue after college.  I have already met some individuals through classroom presentations and student organizations, but what I really want to do now is meet people at specific companies, visit their place of work, and get a feel for “a day in their life” and the culture at different companies.  Besides interning, what else can I do to get these experiences?

Sue L.

jobpostings.net

jobpostings helps students find jobs through our print and online media. Our clients advertise to recruit students on specific campuses through Career Fair Guides and nationally through jobpostings Magazine. We also publish a bi-yearly Disability Issue designed to help students with disabilities identify employers who are looking to hire them. jobpostings is distributed directly into the buildings where students take their classes as well as to campus career centers. It is the only monthly student magazine in North America (published ten times between August and May). Over 2 million students read the Canadian or American version of jobpostings every year to help them find their first job upon graduation.

Check it out TODAY!

Golden Eagle Search has over 5 million national job postings that come from corporate web sites, job boards, education, government, newspaper, and recruiting websites.  Jobs are collected from all industries, disciplines, and regions.

Instructions for accessing Golden Eagle Search:
Golden Eagle Search can be accessed through the MU Career Services Center Career Gateway at: www.mu.edu/gateway.  (Use your eMarq username and password to log in.)

Starting Your Search:
Golden Eagle Search allows for basic and advanced searches and defaults to the advanced search.

Search by Skill Set:
Search by skill set by typing skills you would like to use in your job or internship into the “Skills/Qualifications” field.  You can use words, sentences or phrases in this search field.  For example, you can type in “writing” to search for positions that will utilize writing skills.
* If you are looking for work internationally, typing the city or cities you are considering in this search field will produce results with the city names in the body of the posting.

Search by Job Title:
Use this box to search the job title field of the jobs listed in the database. If you enter “Tax Accountant” in the Job Title box, your results will consist of all of the job listings that have the word ”tax" or “accountant” in the job title.  By checking on the “All words” check box next to the job title field, your results will only contain listings that have words “tax” and “accountant”.  You can use an “*” as a wildcard at end of a search term in the job title field.  For example you can enter “manag*” and your results will contain listings with job titles for Manager, Managing Partner, Management Consultant, etc.

Location Information:
Remember to fill in the city and state where you are looking for work.  If you are searching for a job within a city, you may leave the + miles field blank.  You can also search up to 99 miles from a particular city.

Posting Information:
Golden Eagle Search will display the job postings as they appear on the site where they were originally posted.  Be sure to reference the original website when you indicate where you learned of the position in your cover letter.

Happy Searching!!!
