Dress for Success

Are you preparing for an upcoming job interview?

Do you know how to dress for success?

Follow these tips to look fantastic and feel confident!

BASICS

• It is important to project a professional image.
• Employers may assume that this is the best you will ever look.
• Unfortunately, making your way into the world-of-work means that you may be judged on the way you look and how you present yourself. This may not always be fair. There are a number of things you can do to feel confident about yourself in an interviewing situation. Because, as you know, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
• Dress for the job you want, not the job you have. You’re trying to sell yourself.

MUSTS

• ALWAYS wear a suit to an interview, even if the people who work at the organization are not wearing suits and the job for which you are interviewing doesn’t require it. Remember, the people there already have the job…you don’t!

HYGIENE

• Always have fresh breath and clean body hygiene. This may seem obvious but take a shower, use deodorant, and brush your teeth.
• Wear perfume, cologne, or aftershave that is subtle, some people may be allergic. Your scent should leave the room when you do.
• Cover visible tattoos with makeup.
• Have clean, short nails without ragged edges. Women, have unpolished nails or use clear polish or a neutral tone.
• Take out any piercings (nose, eyebrows, tongue, etc). They can be put back in when you are not interviewing or at work.

WOMEN’S ATTIRE

• A conservative pants or skirt suit (navy, gray, black).
• Clothing that fits your body correctly—clothing is too tight when it is pulling horizontally across your body or has gaping buttons; clothing is too big when tops are falling off the shoulders or pins are used to hold waist bands.
• A slip, if your skirt is unlined. It should be light or dark according to the color of the skirt and length should extend to hemline.
• Minimal accessories (necklaces, earrings, and bracelets) in keeping with the fashion trends of the season. Wear only one ring per hand.
• Clothing that is appropriate for the current season.
• Neat, pressed, clean clothing without tears, rips, hanging threads or pills. All buttons, snaps, or hooks should be on the garment and hems sewn in place.
• Polished shoes with matching belt (if appropriate).
• Sleeve length for suit would fall between your wrists and the top knuckle of your thumb.

MEN’S ATTIRE

• A conservative suit (navy, black, gray).
• Sleeve length for suit should fall between your wrists and the top knuckle of your thumb.
• A matching tie that extends below the belt line.
• An ironed long-sleeve cotton shirt.
• A white undershirt beneath your dress shirt.
• Clothing that is appropriate for the current season.
• Neat, pressed, clean clothing without tears, rips, hanging threads, or pills. All buttons, snaps, or hooks should be on the garment and hems sewn in place.
• Polished shoes with matching belt.

Big East e-Fair

The Big East Career Consortium, in partnership with MonsterTRAK, is offering the third annual Big East e-Fair to the students and alumni of participating colleges and universities among the "Big East" Conference schools. Previous Big East e-Fairs have set records in numbers of participating employers and candidates.

What is an e-fair?

An e-fair is an entirely Internet based job fair. Thousands of students and alumni from Big East colleges and universities will be invited to use the e-fair to search for permanent jobs, summer, co-op, or internship positions.

  • Employers submit information about their organizations and hiring needs.
  • Candidates search for positions online and submit resumes directly to employers.

Candidate Features:

• Access from any internet connected computer
• Opportunities listed by industry or by company name
• Submit previously uploaded resumes or create a new resume
• Submit a cover letter with your resume

PARTICIPATING IN THE BIG EAST E-FAIR:

1. Once the e-Fair has begun you can access the e-Fair by clicking on the e-fair logo that is located above the message box on your personal start page. This is the page that appears once you have logged in using your user name and password. This page is also referred to as the student main menu page.

2. Inside the e-Fair you will see the primary categories by which you may search the participating employers. Not always, but most commonly, "Industry" is used and will therefore be used as an example. In many e-Fairs you will also be able to refine your search with a sub category such as Job Type or Location. If you choose, you may also view a list of all participating employers.

3. By clicking on an industry you will see all of the employers that selected that industry to categorize them. Below the name of the company will be a general description of what the company does and a link to view their job opportunities. Try viewing other industries. There may be jobs in your field in various industry types.

4. Click on the link for viewing job descriptions and you will see all the job listings for that employer. You may submit your resume to as many job opportunities as you would like. To submit your resume just click the Submit Resume button and your resume page will appear.

5. Pick the resume that you want to submit.

6. Click on [Email Resume Now] to email just a resume or click on [Attach Cover Letter] to also send a cover letter. You can then upload a cover letter or create a cover letter online by using the Text Editor box. If you have already uploaded a general cover letter through the resume page then you can choose to submit it with your resume.
