Description
The Faculty Certificate in Electronic Teaching requires the successful completion of six of seven three hour workshops offered by the Center for Teaching and Learning. Successful completion is defined by participation in three required workshops as well as three of four optional workshops and the completion of a teaching project that integrates at least three electronic teaching applications into a course that the faculty member is currently teaching or intends to teach in the near future. Individual assistance will be available in the CTL for these projects beyond what can be provided in the workshops
Each of the workshops will be offered at least once each semester, and more often if there is sufficient interest, and once in the summer. Workshops will include demonstrations, hands-on activities and an opportunity to obtain advice from instructors and other faculty on strategies and techniques that work to strengthen student learning in the digital world of entirely online or blended (face- to- face and online) courses. It is desirable, but not necessary, for the first three workshops listed below to be taken in order.
Goals
- Apply effective course design strategies to the digital teaching context
- Demonstrate ability to effectively use at least three of the following: an electronic course management system, digital imaging, digital presentation software, video and audio production and web-based creation techniques
- Demonstrate ability to integrate technology with performance assessment of student learning and feedback from students for the improvement of instruction
Workshops
- Foundational principles of effective course design, including active learning, feedback and assessment in higher education.
- Methods and strategies I for effective teaching of blended courses with D2L, with applications to entirely online courses (basic course in D2L is a prerequisite)
- Methods and strategies II for effective teaching of blended courses with D2L, with applications to entirely online courses
- Digital imaging and scanning as applied to higher learning
- Video and audio production
- Electronic presentation technology and visual literacy
- Special topics: copyright, ADA implications, plagiarism, ethical issues

Faculty who intend to earn the certificate should plan to pursue a specific project throughout the sequence of workshops, a project that is directly related to their teaching. The project might be a single instructional unit or a larger instructional module that covers several units or class periods. The overall goal will be to redesign a unit or module of instruction in order to strengthen student learning using the content of the workshops and consultation with staff of the CTL. If possible participants should enroll in the workshop series with a departmental colleague who can provide support and advice.
Faculty do not need to be working for the certificate in order to enroll in any of the seven workshops, but they should always come with a specific project to work on as a prerequisite to enrolling in any workshop. Doctoral students who are preparing for careers in higher education are welcome to participate in the certificate program and in individual workshops if there is space available.
