We are living in a rapidly aging society. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans age 65 years or older has increased more than eleven-fold since 1900. This population is projected to continue growing during the next several decades, exceeding 71 million persons in 2030 – nearly twice the number in 2000. The opportunities and challenges of an aging society have led to the creation of new jobs for professionals who understand the aging process and have special skills in working with or on behalf of older people.
Marquette University wants to help you make yourself more marketable in today’s workforce through its graduate program in Gerontology. In this program, you will explore the multidisciplinary study of aging and its effects. Course work leads to a Certificate in Gerontology and is designed to give you:
- An understanding of the broad, interdisciplinary nature of issues which relate to and influence older adults;
- An understanding of the processes of aging;
- A background in existing theories and research in Gerontology;
- An understanding of the programs, policies, and services that exist for older Americans;
- A foundational background as preparatory for graduate work, or professional practice where a knowledge of gerontology is required.
The certificate program offers a convenient schedule for working professionals, with all required courses scheduled in the evenings and on Saturdays. Courses are delivered in traditional classrooms on Marquette University’s campus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. To earn the certificate, you must complete three required courses and one elective course. With appropriate approvals, these courses may also be applied to other graduate programs at Marquette University, whether you choose to do so upon immediate completion of the program or in the future.
