Geriatric Dentistry

Over the 20th century the number of older Americans grew from three million to 35 million.  This trend is projected to continue during the next 25 years for the most part because of the unprecedented number of “baby boomers” who will begin turning 65 in 2011.  By the year 2030 the older population is projected to double, growing from 35 million to 70 million and representing nearly 20 percent of the total U.S. population.

Another trend has been observed in the past 50 years; several surveys in the United States have consistently demonstrated a decline in edentulism (tooth loss) for all age groups. One estimate suggested that by the year 2024 only 10% of Americans ages 65 – 74 would be edentulous.

This aging trend and the increased numbers of tooth surfaces at risk for dental diseases will significantly affect the dental profession.  In addition to clinical skills, general dental practitioners need to gain knowledge and understanding in gerontology to meet demands and effectively provide dental care to their elderly patients.
