Clinic Operations
The Division
of Periodontics is a section within the Department of Surgical
Sciences consisting of Periodontics, Oral Surgery, Endodontics
and Oral Pathology. The Division of Periodontics is housed in
the Surgical Sciences Clinic on the first floor at the School
of Dentistry. The clinic is shared between the divisions of
Periodontics, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology and operates
year round from
8:00 a.m.12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m., Monday

Patient
Care Activities, Referral Source and Scheduling
Patient care
activities carried out in the surgical clinic involve both students
and faculty, depending on the complexity of the case. Simple
exodontias and post-operative care as well as some surgical assisting
is carried out by 2nd year and 3rd year students. Surgical faculty,
assisted by the surgical support staff and students, carry out
complex exodontia, implant surgery, sedation, and hard/softtissue
grafting including periodontal plastic surgery. The goal of this
clinic is to maximize the efficiency and the quality of patient
care while still providing students with a meaningful surgical
rotation experience. The managing graduate dentist, or the undergraduate
group leader refers all patients to the surgery clinic.

The Surgical
Sciences Clinic consists of 17 separate rooms, eight of these
are surgical suites. There are two larger operating rooms
used for implant and sedation cases. There is a conference room
used for the morning case reviews, post-treatment discussions,
faculty journal club and surgical department meetings and seminars.
In
addition, there is a reception room used for scheduling and
appointment confirmation, a recovery room and unisex lavatory for
sedation
patients, a consultation room for patient education and case
presentation, a coordinators office and scrub changing
room.
