Clinic Operations

The Division of Periodontics is a section within the Department of Surgical Sciences consisting of Periodontics, Oral Surgery, Endodontics and Oral Pathology. The Division of Periodontics is housed in the Surgical Sciences Clinic on the first floor at the School of Dentistry. The clinic is shared between the divisions of Periodontics, Oral Surgery and Oral Pathology and operates year round from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m.– 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Patient Care Activities, Referral Source and Scheduling

Patient care activities carried out in the surgical clinic involve both students and faculty, depending on the complexity of the case. Simple exodontias and post-operative care as well as some surgical assisting is carried out by 2nd year and 3rd year students. Surgical faculty, assisted by the surgical support staff and students, carry out complex exodontia, implant surgery, sedation, and hard/softtissue grafting including periodontal plastic surgery. The goal of this clinic is to maximize the efficiency and the quality of patient care while still providing students with a meaningful surgical rotation experience. The managing graduate dentist, or the undergraduate group leader refers all patients to the surgery clinic.

Clinic Floor Plan

The Surgical Sciences Clinic consists of 17 separate rooms, eight of these are surgical suites. There are two larger operating rooms used for implant and sedation cases. There is a conference room used for the morning case reviews, post-treatment discussions, faculty journal club and surgical department meetings and seminars. In addition, there is a reception room used for scheduling and appointment confirmation, a recovery room and unisex lavatory for sedation patients, a consultation room for patient education and case presentation, a coordinator’s office and scrub changing room.
