Graduate School Grid imageGRADUATE STUDIES—ENGLISH

At Marquette University, graduate studies in English offers both immediate and long-term rewards. While at Marquette, students participate in lively classroom discussions, travel to conferences to present their views to colleagues, and refine their own writing for publication in prestigious journals in their fields of interest. In the process, students enjoy opportunities to work with nationally and internationally renowned scholars on sophisticated explorations of literary studies.

Graduate study in English at Marquette University prepares students for rewarding careers in academics as well as honing skills applicable to a range of other pursuits. After graduation many of our MAs find employment in finance, law, publishing, business writing, public relations, and other professional fields. Others continue their studies at Marquette or other first rate universities. The majority of our PhDs find employment in tenure track positions at colleges and universities around the country and, in some instances, around the world.

At the MA and PhD levels, our programs of study merge traditional and contemporary approaches to literary studies. They concentrate on the history and criticism of American and English literature, emphasizing the essential aspects of scholarship, historical research, and literary theory. The Department also offers practical and theoretical instruction in rhetoric and composition to students who hold teaching assistantships.

We welcome inquiries from any interested prospective student. For further information about our programs, contact the Director of Graduate Studies, Michael Patrick Gillespie by email, michael.gillespie@mu.edu, or by writing to him at the Department of English, Marquette University, PO Box 1881, Milwaukee, WI 53201-1881.

Advising

The Department of English and the Graduate School both provide advice to graduate students. The Director of Graduate Studies and other members of the department help graduate students to plan their programs of study. Graduate students should assume full responsibility for their progress by keeping an up-to-date record of the courses they have taken and by checking regularly with the department and the Graduate School office. This handbook supplements the regulations and course descriptions in the Graduate School Bulletin.
