Alison Efford wins dissertation award

Alison Efford, assistant professor, was awarded one of two Fritz Stern Dissertation Prizes from the Friends of the German Historical Institute in Washington for dissertations defended in 2008 on German history, German-American relations, or the history of Germans in North America. Professor Efford’s dissertation, which she is revising as a book manuscript, was called “New Citizens: German Immigrants, African Americans, and the Reconstruction of Citizenship, 1865-1877” and was completed The Ohio State University. The chair of the prize committee, Jonathan Zatlin of Boston University, wrote that the two winners were “distinguished by their methodological innovation, historiographic brilliance, interpretive originality, [and] stylistic polish.” More information can be found on the GHI Web site.
