Public History Update

Spring 2008

The public history program sponsored five speakers this year: Rex Ellis, Vice President for the Historic Area at Colonial Williamsburg, Cinder Stanton, Shannon Senior Historian at the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Monticello, Michael Devine, the Director of the Harry S Truman Library and Museum, and Debra Reid, an associate professor of history and historical administration at Eastern Illinois University.

In addition, the HIST 191 class, “Technology for Historians,” worked with Clayborn Benson, the executive director of the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, to produce an exhibit brochure and conduct oral histories of Milwaukee blacks involved in the protests for open housing and the school integration. To herald the opening of the photograph exhibit, “March on Milwaukee,” David Krugler, an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, presented the keynote address that highlighted Milwaukee’s African American community between 1919 and 1939.
