Robert Turner is a doctoral candidate in sociology at City University of New York and Marquette’s 2009-10 Arnold L. Mitchem Dissertation Fellow. Turner played football in the United States Football League, Canadian Football League and NFL for four years during the late 1980s.
Turner discussed his research on post-NFL life which uncovered how many players come into the league unprepared to handle the fame and fortune. He explained how players oftentimes leave the game with little money, inadequate insurance and unreachable annuities. Turner will defend his dissertation this spring, under the same title of the lecture. He plans to publish a book on his findings.
In 2002, Marquette established the Arnold L. Mitchem Dissertation Fellowship Program, intended to increase the presence of underrepresented ethnic groups in the professoriate by supporting doctoral candidates completing their dissertations.
