ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Jacqui Banaszynski is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and Marquette alumna. She is the Knight Chair at the Missouri School of Journalism and an Editing Fellow at the Poynter Institute. While at the St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press, Banaszynski won the 1988 Pulitzer in feature writing and the Society of Professional Journalists' Distinguished Service Award for "AIDS in the Heartland," an intimate account of the death of a gay farm couple.

ABOUT THE TALK

Banaszynski's speech called for journalists to question how to challenge authority and fight for justice. She spoke about what she considers the three most important attributes of journalists: skill, courage and compassion.

The Dr. Edward D. Simmons Lecture on Society and Human Values aims to further the study of morality and ethics. The lecture honors Dr. Edward D. Simmons, a highly respected Marquette professor of philosophy and vice president for academic affairs.
