Dear students:

Greetings and good wishes to you as we begin the 2010-2011 school year. I hope your summer was filled with rest and replenishment and that you took time to reflect upon the past year—your accomplishments, your blessings, and your hopes for the coming year at Marquette. Indeed, last year was filled with opportunities to make a difference in the world, and this year calls us, as each new year does, to find ways to live out the mission.

Excellence, faith, leadership, service: these are the core of Marquette. We see them as separate yet intertwining aspects of a mission that binds us in our work to create a more tolerant, just world, where people are in communion with one another, endeavoring to honor this great life with which we’ve all been blessed. It is a calling we share. We are women and men for others.

The Division of Student Affairs takes seriously the calling to be men and women for others and cherishing the dignity of every individual. It begins here, on this campus. We are committed to making Marquette an inclusive community, and we value the richness and diversity each person brings to this community. It is through “other” that we come to know the self, and when we are aware of our own selves—our strengths, our weaknesses, our talents and gifts—we can begin to act with a greater purpose in our world.

For our part, the division has recommitted itself to the mission by rewriting our strategic plan. The plan reflects much of the work we already do: educating, embracing, engaging, and empowering students, but it also challenges us to do more. All of us in the division strive, too, to be the difference.

I challenge you to take advantage of all this campus has to offer. I challenge you to go beyond your comfort zone and use your gifts in ways that help to meet the deep needs of the world. Something as small as opening your mind and heart to other points of view, even when they are in contrast to your own, can make a difference.

Sincerely,

L. Christopher Miller, J.D., Ph.D.

Student Leadership Awards

Student leadership awards

The Division of Student Affairs presents leadership awards annually to recognize student contributions to the mission and activities of the various student affairs areas. Students are nominated by staff from the division and throughout the university and are selected by a committee representing each of the student affairs departments and Campus Ministry. Awards are presented at a program held each year in April. Read more about the student leadership awards.
