Dr. Francesca Lopez was the recipient of a 2012 Way Klingler Young Scholar Award, an award intended to support promising young scholars in critical stages of their careers. The awards of up to $32,000 are intended to fund $2,000 in operating costs and to cover up to 50 percent of salary to afford the recipient a one-semester sabbatical.
Dr. Lopez's work, which will begin in Fall 2012, will examine how educational contexts inform the development of a positive ethnic identity and achievement among Hispanic youth between the ages of 4 and 14. The goal of the study is to understand better the developmental trajectory of ethnic identity, and the ways contexts inform its development. In addition to contributing to the body of knowledge, the study will also result in tangible materials that can be used by researchers, educators, and school administrators.
