Marquette Students Excel in NASPA Case Study Competition

Released: 12/8/10

This fall, two College Student Personnel Administration students, Ryan Manning and Staci Hamilton, took second place in the NASPA IV-East case study competition, a professional competition open to master’s degree and doctoral students held in conjunction with the Region Four-East National Association of Student Personnel Administrators Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

“I think that many of our courses in the STPA program were great preparation for the competition,” commented Ryan, “especially in preparing our presentation and public speaking skills. Additionally, our assistantships in Residence Life were also a big help.”

Ryan and Staci competed against five other teams from Iowa State University (who came in first place), Western Illinois University, Taylor University in Indiana, and the University of Toledo.  Their assigned case study dealt with campus climate and residence hall issues for LGBT students and drew from a number of recent events in the news as well as hot topics in student affairs.

"I really see experiences like this helping out in my future career in students affairs," Staci remarked, "As I acquire more and more experience in this sort of decision-making, I am able to become a better professional because of it. On a more resume-centered point of view, I feel that having this honor listed on my resume as I am applying for jobs this spring is going to help me resume stand out to future employers, and hopefully they will see me as a more serious and competent candidate because of it."

Ryan Manning is a second-year student in the Marquette University STPA program. Originally from Boston, MA, Ryan completed his undergrad degree in Latin and History at the University of Missouri. He currently serves as the Assistant Hall Director for Schroeder Hall at Marquette.  This past summer he worked at Brown University with college prep programs for high school students.

Staci Hamilton is also a second-year graduate student in the STPA program. Originally from Blaine, MN (a nothern suburb of Minneapolis), she completed her undergraduate work in English and Music at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN. Before starting the STPA program, Staci was an Admissions Counselor St. Thomas. She works as Assistant Hall Director in McCormick Hall, and was chosen this past summer for an internship through the National Orientation Director's Association (NODA) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
