Master's Student, Patrick Schweiger, Receives Raynor Fellowship

Released: 2/17/14

Mahatma Gandhi once said "The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others."

This quote serves as inspiration for master's student, Patrick Schweiger, whose exemplary academic work was recently recognized through his receipt of a 2014 Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. Fellowship. Each year two Raynor Fellowships are awarded to doctoral students, and just one to qualified master's candidates.

Schweiger hails from Wichita, Kansas. He completed his undergraduate work in Finance with a minor in Spanish at Santa Clara University. Prior to moving to Milwaukee to complete his master's degree in College Student Personnel Administration, he spent six months volunteering in El Salvador and furthering his understanding of the people and culture.

"My career aspirations include working for a Jesuit university directing service and experiential learning programs for students locally and abroad," says Schweiger. "Iam also interested in pursuing a Ph.D. program and doing research into experiential learning programs and measuring the impact they have on the moral and cognitive development of college students as well as the communities in which the students serve."

For Schweiger, the award means much more than simple monetary support.

"With the fellowship money, I don't need to worry about having to work all summer to fund my next year of grad school," says Schweiger, "So I've decided to accept a coordinator position for 5 weeks in the summer with Creighton's ILAC program in the Dominican Republic where I will help coordinate a group of 3rd year medical students as they work in rural clinics in the country while building relationships and gaining a cultural understanding of the people. This is the type of program I would like to eventually direct myself so it aligns nicely with my future career goals."
