2016 Alumni Award Winners

Congratulations to the College of Education Award Recipients for National Alumni Weekend! The ceremony took place on Thursday, April 28, 2016 in the Alumni Memorial Union, and honored the following three Marquette College of Education Alumni:

Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award
This award honors distinguished educational achievement and leadership in care for knowledge, care for profession, and care for person after the age of 35.

Donna HargensDr. Donna Knipple Hargens, Arts ’79
Louisville, Ky.

"The classroom," Donna says, is the “center of the universe,” something she reminds herself of every day while serving as superintendent of the Jefferson County Public School District in Louisville, Ky., charged with ensuring the success of more than 100,000 students in 153 schools.

 

Educational Policy and Leadership Achievement Award
This award recognizes professional achievement in the field of educational policy and leadership, moral and professional character, and loyalty to the ideals of the university.

Mark JoerresDr. Mark T. Joerres, Arts ’85, Grad ’89, ’94
New Berlin, Wis.

As principal of Milwaukee’s St. Thomas More High School, Mark makes it incredibly clear what he finds important: "Spread the gospel message … and, when necessary, use words.

 

Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology Achievement Award
This award recognizes professional achievement in the field of counseling and educational psychology, moral and professional character, and loyalty to the ideals of the university.

Julian SwartzJulian M. Swartz, Grad ’08 
Memphis, Tenn.
To Julian, Marquette is the place that helped him answer the question of “Who am I?” with “Who I am!” As director of player development for University of Memphis men’s basketball, he is helping the student-athletes in his care do the same.

 

These award recipients embody the Marquette mission through their various accomplishments as educators and counselors over the years. The College of Education is proud to say that these three recipients are alumni of the College and hopes they continue living the mission in the years to come.
