College of Education Welcome DiverseCITY Basketball Camp
Released: 8/8/16

This week, thirty-five children from local schools will be on campus for a unique camp experience. DiverseCITY Hoops Basketball Camps utilize distinctive programming that combines athletics and classroom instruction to promote understanding and inclusion among youth of varying socioeconomic and racial backgrounds. Founded in 2007, the nonprofit organization DiverseCITY has organized camps in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Milwaukee.

Camps feature competitions, basketball skill development (for all levels), guest speakers, and an awards ceremony on the final day. Daily classroom instruction is based around themes such as empathy or leadership, and how these apply to life both on and off the court. Learning from former college players gives the campers insight into how to improve their athletic skills, and it also allows for positive role modeling on how those tools can translate into everyday life.
