Community Outreach:

Hermanas/Sistas Workshop

Kenosha, WI

On Monday November 20, 2006, members of the Culture & Well-Being Lab traveled to Kenosha, WI to deliver a workshop about identity and strength to two groups of adolescent girls. The girls were members of Hermanas and Sistas, youth-based community organizations that promote empowerment among young Latina and African American women. As a part of the presentation, the young women were asked to describe attributes related to their identity and to create a collage that visually represented those attributes. The presentation inspired the young ladies to embrace their identities as adolescents and as young women of color. At the conclusion of the presentation, the young women created keepsake bookmarks on which they noted each others’ strengths. This activity encouraged the members of Hermanas and Sistas to focus on their personal strengths as well as the strengths of others.

An article about this community workshop appeared in Fronteras de la Noticia (a Kenosha area Newspaper) on November 28th, 2006, titled Lazos de Amistad: Una reunion de provecho (Bonds of Friendship: A Beneficial Meeting).
