Disclosure of Education/Training Outcomes and Information Allowing for Informed Decision-Making to Prospective Doctoral Students

(American Psychological Association Committee on Accreditation, May 2006; Revised July 2008)

Domain G of the Guidelines and Principles for Accreditation of Programs in Professional Psychology (G&P) requires that doctoral graduate programs provide potential students, current students and the public with accurate information on the program and with program expectations. This information is meant to describe the program accurately and completely, include education and training outcomes, and be presented in a manner that allows applicants to make informed decisions about entering the program.

As stated above, the information requested should include education and training outcomes as well as information that will allow applicants to make informed and comparative decisions. The Committee believes that all doctoral programs should therefore minimally provide the following information regarding education and training outcomes and accurate program descriptions as of January 1, 2007 to potential students in its public documents including its website, if it has one: time to program completion; costs (tuition and fees); internship acceptance rates; fellowships and other funding available; student attrition rates; and licensure outcomes ( added - beginning in 2008).

Information for applicants to our APA-accredited Counseling Psychology Ph.D. Program.

In an effort to fully inform applicants about the APA-accredited programs to which they are applying, all APA-accredited doctoral programs are required to report the following information on their websites: Time to completion of the Ph.D. program, program costs, internship placements, and financial support.

Our Ph.D. program in Counseling Psychology (COPS) at Marquette University was established in 1994 and began matriculating students in that year. Our Ph.D. program in Counseling Psychology was initially accredited by the American Psychological Association in 2002. The COPS program was re-accredited in 2005 with the next site visit scheduled in 7 years (2012; the longest time period granted for a re-accreditation visit). Because APA-accreditation has important impacts upon such matters as applications and internship placements it is important that those who are reviewing these data pay particular attention to the breakdowns between pre-APA-accreditation data (i.e. pre-2002) and post-APA-accreditation data (2002 to present) below.

Time To Completion

American Psychological Association directive: In their public materials, programs should provide the mean and the median number of years that students have taken to complete the program from the time of program entrance. These data should be provided for all graduates over the past seven years. Where applicable, these measures should be provided separately for students who began the program as bachelor level graduates and those who began with advanced standing (e.g., after having completed a separate master's program in psychology). The program should also provide the percentage of students completing the program in fewer than five years, five years, six years, seven years, and more than seven years.

Program Costs

American Psychological Association directive: Programs are expected to make available the costs (i.e., tuition and fees) per student for the current first year cohort. This information should include full time student tuition, tuition per credit hour for part time students, and any fees assessed to students beyond tuition costs. Programs may also provide information regarding current adjustments to tuition including, but not limited to: financial aid, grants, loans, tuition remission, assistantships, and fellowships.

Financial Support

In recent years most of the new full-time students in our doctoral program have been supported by a part-time research assistantship through the department or centers affiliated with our department. Scholarships and fellowships have also helped support some additional students. We will not know the number of assistantships that will be available to next year's students until our admissions offers are sent out to students in the middle of the spring semester. A variety of fellowships and other possibilities are also available for our students (for more information, see http://www.grad.mu.edu/financialaid/index.html ).

Most of the scholarships and assistantships that we offer students in the Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology go to doctoral students. We have two scholarships open only to current students within the department: Adelaide and Herbert Booz Scholarship in Neuropsychology and the Janz Scholarship. A small percentage of our students decline assistantships to pursue outside employment.

We currently (January 2007) have 39 active students in our counseling psychology doctoral program. These students are in various stages of the program. Below, the funding status is broken down by stage in the program.

•  15 are currently funded in an assistantship or fellowship. (see table above)
•  4 students not currently being funded:

•  1 had been previously funded to some level, but relinquished the position for other opportunities;
•  1 student was funded for 3 years
•  1 student was not awarded an assistantship, but was employed at another university.

Completed Doctoral Qualifying Examinations, not yet on internship

9 students have successfully completed their DQEs, but have not started internship (4 are currently applying; 3 are applying next year; 2 - application time TBD)

Of these 9 students:

•  5 are currently in an assistantship
•  4 are not receiving funding through the department. Of these:

•  1 is employed by Marquette University
•  2 are not currently funded but were funded for 3 years
•  1 student was not awarded an assistantship, but was employed outside of the university.

Pre-doctoral Interns*

  • 4 students are currently on internship.
    • All interns are in funded positions.

*all students complete DQEs and propose dissertation prior to applying for internship

All But Dissertation (ABD) Status

  • 7 students are ABD.
    • One student is receiving a Schmitt Fellowship for 2006-2007 academic year.

Internships
American Psychological Association directive: Programs are expected to provide data for at least the most recent seven years of graduates showing their success in obtaining internships. These data should show the number and percentage of students in the following categories:

  • Those who obtained internships
  • Those who obtained paid internships
  • Those who obtained APPlC member internships
  • Those who obtained APA/CPA accredited internships
  • Those who obtained internships conforming to CDSPP guidelines (school psych only)
  • Those who obtained two year half-time internships

NOTE: In calculating the percentages, the program must use the total number of students applying for internship that year.

One applicant chose not participate in the APPIC Match and secured an internship at a local clinic. Per our program policy - at minimum, all internships must meet APPIC standards.

**One applicant did not match in the APPIC Match - this applicant was selected for a local internship and was subsequently hired into a post-doctoral position at the site.

***Funding for one applicant's internship was cut two weeks before starting, applicant decided to accept an unfunded internship at a different local site

Student Attrition From Program

American Psychological Association directive: Programs are expected to report the number and percentage of students who have failed to complete the program once matriculated. These data should be calculated by dividing the number of matriculated students who have left the program for any reason by the total number of students matriculated in the program. These data should be provided for all students who have left the program in the last seven years or for all students who have left since the program became initially accredited, whichever time period is shorter.
