$50K Grant in Science Awarded
Released: 2/05/05
In late January, the UW System Administration awarded a grant of $50,220 to Marquette University under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) Title II Higher Education Professional Development Program (Wisconsin ESEA Improving Teacher Quality) for support of the following project:
Grant: Modeling in Physical Science for Urban Science Teachers Grades 6-10
The Modeling Grant is a joint project sponsored by Marquette's School of Education, the Department of Physics, the Milwaukee Public Schools and the Milwaukee Academy of Science. Twenty (20) middle and high school science teachers from Milwaukee area schools are participating in this project. Activities include two-week summer modeling institutes, four half-day follow-up modeling workshops, an online community, classroom mentoring, and two visits per year to other project participants in their schools. Teachers earn 4 graduate credits per year for participation and the grant also provides them with funds and a Marquette faculty member (Michele Korb) to help them implement the modeling curriculum in their classrooms.
The project, in its second year of funding, exists under the direction of Dr. Joan Whipp . It was recommended for funding by a broadly-based team of reviewers representing Wisconsin 's K-12 schools, University of Wisconsin System institutions, private higher education institutions, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, and Wisconsin businesses. Marquette University and the project personnel are to be commended for success in this competitive process. The 22 funded projects throughout Wisconsin will be awarded $1,182,064.
