School Counseling Students Awarded Scholarships

Three students in the School Counseling program at Marquette received scholarships from national organizations for the 2007-08 academic year.

Laura Sherwood, was awarded a WSCA scholarship. The Wisconsin School Counselor Association (WSCA) supports school counselors' efforts to promote academic, personal/social and career development in all students.  Through the development, implementation, and evaluation of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program, school counselor help students achieve success in schools and prepare students to address the challenges of life, to lead fulfilling lives, and to address these issues as responsible members of society. WSCA provides professional development (specifically through the annual conference in Stevens Point), advocates for school counselors with legislators, parents, school boards, and other educational professionals, and promotes research on school counseling programs in service to over 1300 school counselors in Wisconsin.

Lauren Dowell and Ryan Stengl were both recipients of ASCA scholarships. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) awards scholarships annually to up to ten students currently enrolled in master's level school counseling programs. One of the goals of the scholarship program, which is sponsored by Anheuser Busch and the ASCA Foundation, is to encourage minority students and males to enter the school counseling profession.
