Institute for Urban Environmental Risk Management
Adivsor: Dr. Charles S. Melching, Director
The mission of the Institute for Urban Environmental Risk Management is threefold: to conduct and coordinate interdisciplinary environmental and water resources research, to promote and coordinate interdisciplinary education in environmental management, and to provide a center of knowledge on urban environmental/flood control issues. The Institute provides excellent opportunities for graduate students interested in solving problems of global importance, as evidenced by the Institute’s international collaborations with universities in Italy, Poland, and Japan. In addition the Institute hosted the 5th International Conference on Diffuse/Nonpoint Pollution and Watershed Management (2001), which involved participants from more than 30 countries, and the U.S.-Chinese Joint-Workshop on Sediment Transport and Environmental Studies (2002). Recent research projects include the following: risk-based urban watershed management -- integration of water quality and flood control objectives, development of a water-quality model for unsteady flow in the Chicago waterway system, and urban watershed management under conflicting objectives -- application to the Root River.
