Graduate Programs
Civil and Environmental Engineering

A variety of graduate programs is available, each of which is tailored to meet the interests and needs of the individual student. More details of the specific program and degree requirements, including course descriptions, may be found in the Graduate Bulletin.

Graduate Certificate Program: 12 credits course work

The Graduate Certificate Program is a non-degree program comprising 12 credits of course work (typically four 3-credit courses) in one of the following areas:

  • Construction Engineering and Management
  • Structural Design
  • Transportation
  • Water and Wastewater Treatment Processes
  • Water Resources Engineering

Certificate programs in other areas may also be developed in consultation with a faculty advisor. The program is designed for practicing engineers and other qualified individuals with bachelor’s degrees, who wish to update or expand their knowledge and skills in a specific area, but do not necessarily wish to pursue the M.S. or Ph.D. degree.

Master of Science (M.S.) Degree Program

Students pursuing the Master of Science (M.S.) degree may select one of two different options:

  • M.S. -- Thesis Option: 24 credits course work plus 6 credits thesis

The Thesis Option involves an in-depth research experience, the details of which are reported in the thesis. The thesis represents an original research contribution to the field and often results in one or more publications in the technical literature.

  • M.S. -- Course Work Option: 30 credits of course work

The Course Work Option does not require that the student submit a written document; instead, additional course work is completed. This option is attractive to those individuals who wish to obtain additional depth and breadth in one or more technical areas.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree Program

Students pursuing the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)degree must complete 60 credits course work (beyond B.S. degree) plus 12 dissertation credits.

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degree involves extensive course work in the student's area of interest and in related areas. Moreover, a doctoral dissertation must be written. This document represents the culmination of an original, significant research investigation. The Ph.D. degree is ideal if an individual has aspirations for a research career in industry or in a government laboratory, or if the goal is to obtain an academic position at a university.
