MEEN Hosts International Conference

Immediately following an event-filled commencement weekend, your Department of Mechanical Engineering leapt into an even busier week: hosting the Thirty-Fourth North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC 34) on campus.

A leading international forum for manufacturing research, 190 university, industry, and national laboratory representatives from twelve countries attended this year’s NAMRC. During the four-day dialogue, 80 technical papers on basic and applied research in material forming, material removal, and manufacturing systems and controls were presented and discussed. A highlight of the social program was the evening banquet in the Grand Reception Hall of the Calatrava-designed Milwaukee Art Museum, located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Great surroundings … great camaraderie … great memories!

Conference Co-chairs Dr. G. E. Otto Widera, Professor and Senior Associate Dean, and Dr. Kyuil Kim, Chair of the Mechanical Engineering Department, said participants were extremely complimentary about the day-to-day organization and presentations, with one of the NAMRC Board of Directors telling them that Marquette had “raised the bar too high” for future conferences!

Take a bow for making our College shine internationally, Otto and Kyuil – and to your hardworking organizing committee: Drs. Vikram Cariapa, Joseph Domblesky, Jong Soo Kim, Mark Polczynski, James Rice, Robert Stango, and Annette Wolak, Jessica Lachenschmidt, Joan Weber, Kristie Kay, Yamilka Cortes, and Elizabeth Quick. And special thanks to the conference co-sponsors: Briggs & Stratton Corporation, Brady Corporation, Rockwell Automation, and Director Supply Inc.
