Scholarship Campaign
It took an engineer to see a rock and
think wheel.
Engineers have the vision that inspires progress.
Students need better tools than a club and rock.
They need help meeting the cost of tuition.
Marquette's College of Engineering is recruiting some of the country's brightest students. Their skill and commitment deserve recognition and merit our support. That's why the college is embarking on a campaign to establish an $32 million endowed scholarship program.
Follow Our Progress: $32 Million Endowded Scholarship Campaign
A letter from Paul Gogan - President - College of Engineering Alumni Association
You and I know Marquette is a Midwest gem, combining Jesuit
values with common sense you can almost grab out of the air
riding the back roads and suburban byways of Wisconsin, Minnesota, and
northern Illinois.
But arquette has never been a regional university.
Think about it. Our Golden Eagles now play in the Big East,
sharing the stage with peers in New York, Philadelphia, and
more.
We’ve just inked memos of agreement for collaborative
engineering research in China and Eastern Europe.
Out on the coast, a growing group of alumni in
northern California have begun to actively
promote our College to high school achievers.
So far, they’ve rallied other alumni for more
than $25,000 COE scholarship dollars
and sent the single largest Californian
freshman contingent to campus in our
College’s history!
Nearer to home, a similar effort to engage high school counselors in
the Detroit area is being led by a great friend of the College and fellow
alumni, John Rakolta.
What’s the point? Read the Dean’s letter. Take a look at the article on
transformational curriculum. Look at our ongoing leading-edge research.
The point is your College is on the brink of being more – and
operating at a higher profile – than ever before!
Now the reality check!
No college, especially a College with the unbelievable potential of our
own, can achieve its greatest destiny without alumni involvement. As
President of your College of Engineering Alumni Association, I am excited
how each day we reach out and engage more and more “lost” alumni
that have not had contact with MU since graduation.
You, me, everyone simply must get more involved. Scan through the
articles within and you find plenty of clues how. Sit back and think quietly
for five minutes and you’ll likely come up with something even better!
But there is one program that I want to personally underscore as
something you can readily touch.
Dean Stan Jaskolski started a very aggressive COE Endowed
Scholarship fund about two years ago. The idea behind it is to offer the
brightest and best high-school applicants 160, $10,000 scholarships
in steady state. These scholarships would ensure that those gifted
students that want to come
to Marquette could in fact afford to come to
Marquette – and continue to fulfill our
ultimate legacy.
Stan started by securing a very generous
$1 million matching donation. He wore those
Allen Edmonds blue and gold shoes until he
hit $2 million.

Then he switched to running
shoes – we need to move faster, he said –
and our College is now at $8 million. If we all
drew up a check for just $100, we could make our next milestone of $10
million before the end of December 2006.

I know some of us can’t. But
many of us can, and some of us can afford a good deal more. The final
goal, remember, is $32 million. And we will get there, one donation at a time.
So let’s start with your donation. The best way is to send your check to:
Marquette University
College of Engineering
Olin Engineering
P.O. Box 1881
Milwaukee, WI 53201-1881.
Be sure to include a
notation designating that the donation is for the College of
Engineering Endowed Scholarship Fund. Please do it now!
The spirit of Marquette is to give back, to be there for others. It’s time
for all of us to be there for the next generation of Marquette Engineers.
