Michael
Patrick Gillespie
Louise Edna Goeden
Professor of English
Although for
most of my professional career I have written about the
work of Irish authors like James Joyce and Oscar Wilde,
teaching at Marquette has allowed me to engage a much
broader spectrum of authors, from the anonymous Beowulf
poet to Salman Rushdie. I have also been
able to teach courses on film, on gender, and on literature
and theories of chaos/complexity. I think that
my development as a critic has benefited greatly from
the variety of courses that the department has encouraged
me to offer, but even more significantly I have profited
from the encouragement of my colleagues and the enthusiasm
of my students. Their comments, their questions,
and their energy have helped me refine my own thoughts
about reading literature and put some of those ideas down
on paper.
