Professor

Tim William Machan

My teaching and research interests focus on medieval literature and language.   I'm particularly s on social anxieties associated with change and variation in the history of English.interested in the ways in which language uses in literature and everyday settings relate to one another and also in the relations between the disciplines of linguistics and literary studies.   To this end, I regularly teach courses on Chaucer, Old English, and the history of the English language.

I've published eight books, forty articles, and thirty reviews on topics ranging from early print culture, to scribal practice, to medieval multilingualism, to Chaucer's translation practices, to the history of English. My most recent books are a revised version of my edition of the old Norse poem Vafþrúðnismáll (Toronto, 2008), Chaucer's 'Boece' (Carl Winter, 2008), and Sources of the 'Boece' (Georgia, 2005), which contains critical texts of Chaucer's Latin and French sources. In 2009 my book Language Anxiety, which concentrates on social conflicts associated with change and variation in the history of English, will appear from Oxford University Press. I continue to work on the history of English and on the standardization of English in the early modern period in particular.
