Departmental Writing Contests
January 28. 2008

THE MAE E. GALES CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST, 2007-2008
GENRE:
A short story, not to exceed 5,000 words in length.

AWARD:
Cash Prize of $200.00

ELIGIBILITY:
All full-time undergraduates of the university are eligible unless they already hold an academic or professional degree.

JUDGING:
Work is judged on the basis of its freshness and technical skills. The judges reserve the right not to award a prize at any given year.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:

a. Entries are received in two ways: 1) Direct nomination of a specific faculty member; or 2) Direct submission of a piece by a student.

b. The story must be original. Contestants may consult with faculty about their work, but must not receive excessive coaching.

c. Contestants should write their name, address, a contact phone number, and the title of their submission on a cover sheet. The following signed statement should also appear on the cover sheet: “I hereby certify that I received no unfair aid in writing this story”. Signed, {name}.” Contestants’ names should not appear on the manuscripts, which will be anonymous when judged.

d. Three copies of the manuscript, one of which needs to include a cover sheet, should be delivered to the English Department by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 1, 2008.

e. Contestant should keep a copy of the submission, as cannot be returned.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNER:
Winners of the contest will be notified in advance, and prizes will be awarded at the English Department's end-of-semester gathering in early May.

THE ZADOK ESSAY CONTEST 2007-2008

GENRE:
An essay, not to exceed 1,500 words. The essay can be on any current issue of general, community interest: literary, political, philosophical, or personal.

AWARD:
First prize of $200.00, second prize of $150.00.

ELIGIBILITY:
All full-time undergraduates of the university are eligible unless they already hold an academic or professional degree.

Work is judged on the basis of its freshness, intellectual rigor, and technical skills.

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE:
