The best sessions start very early in the writing process. The writer comes in with an assignment to discuss with a tutor.

The tutor draws the writer out, helping her select a sharpened focus and decide how to support a tentative claim.

The writer sometimes gets some useful writing done during the session.

The tutor and the writer then make another appointment to work with the draft of the paper.
