A Prayer for the New Year
In the Gospel of Matthew we hear the words:
And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them,
until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.
They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
and on entering the house
they saw the child with Mary his mother.
They prostrated themselves and did him homage.
Then they opened their treasures
and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
We at Marquette celebrate this New Year as our journey continues and we seek the Lord in new and varied ways; in new people, in new places, in new experiences. What gifts do we bring to this New Year? What treasures have we discovered in the mystery of our lives? How will this year be different, more challenging, better?
Our lives are made of days and nights, of seasons and years, for we are part of a great universe vast and wide. We mark ends and we make beginnings and, in all, we praise God for the grace and mercy that fill our days. Bless us at the turning of the year and fill the months ahead with hope.
Let all the possibilities of God’s grace and opportunities lead us closer to God and to one another in 2013.
