Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards
Marquette University is required by federal regulation to apply
both qualitative and quantitative standards in measuring academic
progress for financial aid purposes. These standards apply to
all students who receive institutional, state, and federal Title
IV and Title VII funds administered by the University. Federal
Title IV programs include Federal Pell Grants, Federal Supplemental
Educational Opportunity Grants, Federal Direct Stafford and PLUS
Loans, Federal Perkins Loans and Federal Work-Study. Title VII
programs include Federal Nursing Loans, Health Professional Loans
for Dental students, and Disadvantaged Scholarships, Grants and
Loans.
Marquette has established the following criteria in conjunction
with federal regulations published on October 6, 1993, Federal
Register Part 668.16 and in the Higher Education Amendments of
1986.
I. Qualitative Standards of Academic Progress
Financial aid recipients are governed by the performance standards
of the school or college in which they are enrolled. After two
years of attendance or junior standing, students who received
financial aid for the first time during or after 1987-88 must
also have a 2.0 grade point average, or have academic standing
at that point in the program that is consistent with the institution's
requirements for graduation. This standard will not be monitored
during summer session(s).
II. Quantitative Standards of Academic Progress
The Juris Doctor Degree
Applicants for financial aid are expected to complete a degree
within a residence of 8 uninterrupted semesters. See Law School
Handbook for residence explanation.
The Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree
Applicants for financial aid are expected to complete a degree
within 10 semesters. In addition, the following quantitative
standards
must be met:
Note: Incompletes, not reported grades, grades
of "F" or audit credits will not be counted as earned credits.
This standard will not be monitored during summer session(s).
III. Failure to Meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards
A. Qualitative Standard
- First Occurrence - After four terms of attendance
or junior standing, students who received financial aid for
the first time during or after 1987-88 must have a 2.0 grade
point average, or have academic standing that is consistent
with the institution's requirements for graduation. Students
who do not meet this requirement will be ineligible for further
aid consideration. Eligibility can be regained by achieving
a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 after one semester at
his/her own expense.
B. Quantitative Standard
- First Occurrence - For any academic year
in which a student enrolls but does not satisfactorily meet
the standards, the student will be put in a warning status.
The student will be notified of this status in writing.
- Second Occurrence - If a student fails to
meet the standards for a second consecutive time, he/she will
be ineligible for further aid consideration. Eligibility can
be regained by making satisfactory progress one semester at
his/her own expense.
If a student in an ineligible status receives aid, full
repayment will be required of all funds received, excluding Federal
Work-Study. A student currently working under the Federal
Work-Study program will have his/her employment terminated under
that program.
Reinstatement of Eligibility
Once a student has made satisfactory progress during a particular
semester at Marquette at his/her own expense, the student must
provide the Office of Student Financial Aid with a final grade
report. The student will then be reinstated to an eligible status.
IV. Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Procedures
- Student must complete Section A of the Appeal
form (available in the Office of Student Financial Aid)
and forward to the appropriate academic dean for completion
of Section B.
- Results of the appeal will be communicated to the student
from the Office of Student Financial Aid.
- Appeal must be made prior to the end of the semester for which
aid is desired.
- Recommendation of the dean is final.
