¡Bienvenidos al Capítulo de Gamma Gamma!

Welcome to a new year at Marquette and a new year at Sigma Delta Pi! With our new, motivated E-board, we are excited to partake in many interesting happenings this semester, including member, social, community service and recruitment events. Our new E-board for 2011-2012, Traci Sheehan – President, Anita Richmond and Margaret Czerwien - Co-Vice Presidents (Maggie until December), Kirsten Lehman - Secretary/Historian, Adam Emmart – Treasurer, Elizabeth Agnes - Webmaster/ Public relations.

Initiation Ceremony

On Saturday, November 12, 2011, Sigma Delta Pi at Marquette was happy to initiate ___ new members. We were very proud to have ________Jose Moreno____ as our guest speaker, who shared with us some of his work in teaching mathematics to children of lower-income families. ¡Muchísimas gracias Señor Moreno!

Scholarships

There are many scholarships being offered for trips focused in Spanish culture, language-learning, and service. For more information and due dates, go to the national SDP website at www.sigmadeltapi.org

El Premio Mario Vargas Llosa
Sigma Delta Pi and the the American Association of Spanish and Portuguese co-sponsor their Mario Vargas Llosa Award, granted yearly to one undergraduate Spanish major or minor who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in all upper-division courses completed and exemplary involvement in extra-curricular activities as related to Spanish. Check back in the spring of 2012 for the official nomination form and award criteria.

El Premio Gabriela Mistral
Any/every active chapter may nominate one outstanding student per year for El Premio Gabriela Mistral. The awardee, who may be either a graduate or undergraduate student, must be an active member of Sigma Delta Pi, as defined in the By-laws. Nominations, together with supporting documentation, including several letters of recommendation and a current transcript, should be e-mailed to the Executive Director. Winners will be given a handsome certificate and a book award.

¡Feliz cumpleaños Sigma Delta Pi!

November 14, 2011 celebrated the 92nd birthday of Sigma Delta Pi. On that Friday back in 1919 at the University of California Berkeley, a graduate student named Ruth Barnes founded Sigma Delta Pi. Recent Accomplishments of the Chapter:

For the 19th consecutive year (1992 to present) Gamma Gamma has been declared a "Chapter of Honor and Merit", a distinction only given to those ten best chapters in the countryfor their outstanding services in various areas (e.g., community, academic, social, etc.). The decision is based on the chapter's Activities Report for a given year.

Awards given to Chapter Members during 2010-11:

Two chapter members were awarded Sigma Delta Pi's Summer-2011 Scholarships: Ms. Nicole Thompson (Quito, Ecuador) and Ms. Maritza Martin (Cuenca, Ecuador).

Ms. Brooke McEwen was granted the GABRIELA MISTRAL National AWARD for her outstanding services as Vice-President in charge of our major community activity: ESL Sunday lessons at St. Adalbert Church in the south side. Also, Ms. Mary Zuidema received a special certificate of recognition for her superb work as President of the chapter during 2010-11.

Initiations:

A total of 40 students were initiated in two ceremonies: November (23 students- fall initiation) and March (17 students- spring initiation). Dr, César Ferreira, UW-M professor was the guest speaker for the fall and Visiting Professor Vicky Unruh was the guest speaker in the spring ceremony. Family and friends were invited to the receptions that followed.

Fall initiation of 2011 will be at the AMU, room 157 on Saturday, November 12, at 2:00 p.m. reception to follow for parents and members.

"Tertulia de los maites" from 7-9 every Tuesday that the Tuertulia meets to practice, an informal social event. At Holthusen 4th floor OIE office. Come anytime, this is not a tutoring service but a social occasion to use Spanish.
